An age old debate is to have the big or small umbrella. Each type has its limitations, pros and cons. You may think a large umbrella is more suitable for a male and a compact umbrella respectively appropriate for a female. It is not as clear cut as it seems.
The big umbrella is most useful to shield you from the rain or sun. It’s use comes from its wide diameter of cover and longer handle. You can hold it high and it will cover a lot of surface area, making sure you stay dry or in the shade if you are on the beach. The problems arise when you are walking and have to dodge other people with large umbrellas or the difficulties managing your umbrella when you are inside. Since it is long and wide, putting it in a bag can prove troublesome and annoying. Likewise, having a wider umbrella frequently hits passerbys and is harder to carry on long walking trips.
The small umbrella not only offers less protection but less hassle too. You don’t have to worry about hitting anyone and it is not as heavy or cumbersome as a bigger variation. You can pack it neatly in a tote or purse and placing it on a table when sitting to eat poses no problem, unlike the bigger umbrella. The main problem is the defense against rain. While walking you stand to get splashed by raindrops a lot more often than with a wide cover. If you add wind in, you will most definitely get wetter than with a big umbrella.
If dryness is an issue, it seems logical to go with the big umbrella and overall convenience go with a small one.
